The charm of an oak beamed ceiling

More and more people are choosing oak beam ceilings in their homes or living spaces. The reasons vary; sometimes the beams serve a structural purpose, but often they are used decoratively as architectural ornamental beams. This is a common topic that we are happy to share more information about and to offer inspiration for your projects.

Conceptual inspiration

In addition to supplying beam lumber, we like to share our vision of oak beam ceilings. With the help of AI, we can now visualize this vision. We are happy to show some beautiful beam ceilings that add warmth and texture to spaces and create a timeless look.

Why an oak beam ceiling?

A ceiling with wooden beams offers several advantages, both aesthetic and functional.

Aesthetic Benefits

Wood beams add atmosphere and warmth to a room, creating a sense of coziness. They provide a natural look and timeless charm that looks great in both traditional and modern interiors.

Acoustic Benefits
Wood beams have positive effects on the acoustics of a room. The wood absorbs and dampens sound, helping to improve sound quality and reduce echoes. This is especially useful in large, open spaces where sound can otherwise reverberate strongly.

Architectural Benefits
Installing oak beams is an effective way to enhance the architectural appeal of a space. Old oak beams can accentuate the most beautiful features of a living space, help define different zones within large, open spaces, and draw attention to the height and shape of the ceiling. This results in an enhanced aesthetic and a refined atmosphere and layout of the space.

Functional Benefits
In addition to their visual and acoustic benefits, wood beams also provide structural support and can help hide pipes and wiring. This makes them a practical choice for a variety of construction challenges

What beams are available?

Choosing either old softwood or old oak can be a difficult choice. Both types of wood have a number of advantages. For example, the property can be a factor in the choice of wood species. If there is a lot of oak in the property, the obvious choice for this space is oak as well. On the other hand, many old softwood beams are also incorporated into structures, and thus softwood beams can perfectly match the property. When choosing oak for a construction or renovation project, there are two main options: old, used oak and wind-dried oak.

Old oak beams

Old oak, which has been used before, is characterized by its whimsical shapes and unique hues. This old oak beams may show imperfections such as cracks, knots and traces of previous treatments. These characteristics contribute to a rustic and authentic look, ideal for rooms that need a warm and historic ambiance. Old oak is particularly suited to traditional and rustic interior styles.

In addition to large beams, we also have large batches of old oak child beams.

Wind-dried oak beams

Wind-dried oak, on the other hand, offers a tighter and neater finish. These beams are straight and free of signs of previous use. They are often brushed, sanded or planed to create a smooth and uniform surface, depending on the architects’ choice. This type of oak is ideal for modern and contemporary designs where a clean and minimal aesthetic is desired, as well as more rustic interiors. The wind-dried oak beams also ideally suited for structural purposes thanks to its stability and durability.

Some two projects

Penthouse vondelpark
In a 19th century building near the Vondelpark in Amsterdam, ZU Studio’s oak beams are integrated into the interior in a sophisticated way. Choosing light large oak beams creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that combines modern minimalism with rustic charm. The beams enhance the architectural lines and subtly define the space, resulting in a harmonious and elegant whole. This approach creates a balance between contemporary aesthetics and historic elements.

Private residence
For a residential housing project, we supplied old oak purlins and beams. The architects chose to give these beams a lime treatment. This treatment creates a serene and bright ambiance that both preserves the historic charm of the old oak beams and creates a fresh, modern look.
